Set against the backdrop of the raid by the 47 Ronin and the Duel at Takadanobaba, this masterpiece of period drama depicts the friendship and tragic love between two swordsmen. Based on the original work by master of period novels Gomi Kosuke, it was adapted by Ito Daisuke, also known as the "father of period dramas," and elegantly directed by Mori Issei. It has been beautifully realized as a rich and flavorful period romance. Ichikawa Raizo plays the lead role of the tragic swordsman, and Katsu Shintaro as Horibe Yasubei, the finest swordsman of the 47 Ronin.
On his way to Takadanobaba to assist his uncle, the ronin Nakayama Yasubei meets the samurai Tange Tenzen, and with his advice, defeats his opponents in a duel. However, Tenzen is criticized for not coming to the aid of his fellow Chishin-ryu dojo despite being present at the duel and is expelled from the school. Yasubei was also expelled from the Horiuchi-ryu school. Both are in love with Chiharu, the younger sister of the representative of the Edo elder retainer of the Uesugi family, and are tossed about by chance, leading to a fateful drift...
