1858: Japan opens trade with Europe at Yokohama, and (real-life historical character) Nakai-ya Jubei (Kitaoji Kinya) sees his fortune grow, opening a store in this bustling city, a dangerous world where gangs of angry ronin kill at a whim, and corrupt shogunate officials single out the successful Jubei for legalized extortion. His struggle threatens the lives of his co-workers and sends his innocent life on a path of self-destruction.
