Shogunate ninja Sanzo and Gosuke discover a clan succession conspiracy, but when their efforts are ignored by a corrupt superior, they reject the spy game and hit the road. But shinobi can never truly escape the life and the lingering frustration of the clan intrigue is an itch they cannot scratch. Returning to the scene of the crime, they become entangled in a web of shady merchants and back-stabbing lords, with dozens of samurai in lockdown waiting to revolt, and two lovely ladies trying to keep their own heads once the swords fly. But our vagabond heroes no longer play by the rules, even for ninja, and in a Spaghetti Western-like twist use extortion on the extorters themselves in this nifty gem. Genre legend Hiroki Matsukata leads an excellent cast through some first-rate action scenes and well-executed night fighting. Organically likable characters in an entertaining entry from a superb era of TV ninja drama.
