COURTESY OF ICHIBAN

One of the most exploited tropes of the 1960s ninja genre was shinobi secretly being the catalysts of every major event in feudal history, and this wild and kinky adaptation of a Yamada Futaro novel is no different. The great Tanba Tetsuro stars as a bitter and disaffected ninja tasked with breaking up the revenge scheme of a band of ronin from the disgraced Asano clan. His squad of sexy female ninja use their feminine charms and bizarre nigh-magical techniques to seduce the would-be avengers away from their sworn oaths. By the time a surprising twist turns their efforts upside down, there are only 47 Ronin left… and the rest is history. The signature noir-ish cine-matography and moody atmosphere of the genre is well represented here, with the addition of an experimental score that heightens the bizarre activities of the lady shinobi. Sardonic in tone, dripping in sexual tensions, yet still finding time for plenty of shuriken flinging and sword slinging action, this oddity from the height of the 60s Japanese ninja craze does not disappoint, and neither does Tanba in a performance reminiscent of Bohachi.
