Ryoji, (Takakura Ken) faithful member of the Aramasa yakuza family, takes the law into his own hands, striking back against the violent thugs of their rivals, the Tanuma gang, wounding their boss. Taking the honorable path, he surrenders to the police, earning a term in prison. A year before his release, his boss falls ill and passes on the leadership to another.
