Set in the late Edo period, the story follows Hanshichi, a young former petty criminal turned "okappiki" (investigator), portrayed by Hiroyuki Sanada. Two years after the death of his wife, he lives alone, unaware of his sister-in-law Kumi's feelings for him. As Hanshichi navigates personal struggles, he and his four quirky subordinates tackle challenging mysteries in Edo.
