With Chikamatsu himself being portrayed in this film by Kataoka Chiezo, one of Japan's greatest actors, this remarkable motion picture blends reality with fiction as it represents the true world of Kabuki and how being seen in the West, as never before. Chikamatsu Monzaemon is the William Shakespeare of Japan, and his plays include Chushingura" (The Tale of the 47 Ronin), and "Yotsuya Kaidan” (Yotsuya Ghost Story).
