From the pen of Shiba Ryotaro comes this story about the heroic Kawai Tsugunosuke, known as the "last samurai." Koizumi Takashi, longtime assistant to master filommaker Kurosawa Akira, and director of the hit movie “After The Rain” not only directed, but wrote the screenplay as well.

In 1867 as the Tokugawa shogunate collapsed, domains split into eastern and western armies. Nagaoka domain chief retainer Kawai Tsugunosuke (Yakusho Koji) struggled to avoid warfare and maintain neutrality to protect the lives of his people. However, talks break down and Kawaii is forced to take up arms against the imperial forces. Great battle scenes highlight this historical epic as the 690 man Nagaoka force valiantly stands up to the imperial army of 50,000 men! This is an instant classic, not to be missed!
