Mifune Toshiro stars as the illegitimate son of a powerful feudal lord who becomes a master swordsman but also a social outcast. Looking to make a name for himself he joins forces with the multiple clans against the taiko (chief minister), Ii Naosuke. Ii brought upon himself the wrath of the Satsuma, Mito, and Choshu domains after opening Japan to the West. 'Taiko' (Prime Minister) Ii Naosuke initiated the Ansei Purge to silence his critics, which led to an assassination plot hatched by the three provinces to remove Ii from his position of power. This film was inspired by the Sakurada Gate Incident, in lunar March of 1860, which changed the course of Japanese history. While not exactly a companion piece to Okamoto's Sword of Doom, the two movies are closely related, pertaining to the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. Possibly Mifune's greatest performance as the master swordsman lost to the annals of history.
