From the pen of Akutagawa Ryunosuke (author of Rashomon) comes this remarkable motion picture. NAKADAI Tatsuya and NAKAMURA Kinnosuke give extraordinary performances. Possibly the finest of their careers. One of the greatest films in any genre. In the 12th century Great Lord Horikawa of the Fujiwara clan ruled Japan. While those of high rank lived in luxury, the peasants faced extreme poverty and began to rise in rebellion.

The Great Lord (NAKAMURA Kinnosuke) wants to commission an artist (NAKADAI Tatsuya) to paint a portrait of Paradise on the walls of the new temple.  In addition, the Great Lord wants to be the central figure as Buddha. When the artist Yoshihide replies that he can only paint what he sees, and that he sees no Paradise in the harsh life of the poor, the Great Lord asks him if he can paint a portrait of Hell.  Since Yoshihide can only paint what he sees, he must create Hell first, and he does just that through a combination of design and his own stubbornness. Meanwhile, Yoshihide’s beautiful daughter has been taken hostage by the Great Lord until the painting is finished. The grand finale must be seen to be believed!
