Superstar Nakadai Tatsuya leads a fine cast, including a young Tamura Masakazu in this deeply moving tale of unrequited love during the Warring States period in Japan. Ogin, the beautiful daughter of tea master Sen no Rikyu sadly falls in love at first sight with Sir Takayama Ukon, who angered the chancellor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi by joining the Christian faith. Amidst a sea of discontent and fearing the rise of that barbarian religion, the stage is set for a drama of truly tragic proportions. This is the classic version of the story, surprisingly directed by Japan’s only female filmmaker of note, Tanaka Kinuyo.
