A color remake of “Inn of Evil” one of Japan’s greatest classic films starring Nakadai Tatsuya, this time as the proprietor of a smuggling business in Edo during the samurai era. Illegal trade was being carried out under the blind eye of a corrupt police official. Meanwhile the “Serenity Inn” which doesn’t welcome strangers hosts three outsiders in one day but only two emerge. Nakadai Tatsuya’s wife, Ryu Tomoe was the screenwriter for both versions and the music by Sato Masaru sets the suspenseful tone, much as did Takemitsu Toru’s composing for the original film. Ryu Daisuke gives a smoldering performance as expert knife fighter Sada the Indifferent, and Yamamoto Kei reprises his role as the hapless young man that elicits the flickering humanity of the Isle’s evil denizens.
