This is the life story of Takasugi Shinsaku, the man who turned the tide against the shogunate’s forces and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for he Choshu Clan as Japan was embroiled in its Civil War during the 1860’s. Together with Saigo Takamori, Takasugi Shintaro was a pivotal figure as Sakamoto Ryoma’s dream of a Choshu-Satsuma joint alliance began to take shape. From his early beginnings as a minor official, Takasugi had to basically pull himself up by the bootstraps to become the powerful military genius with an eye on the future of Japan. Matsudaira Ken gives a brilliant performance, again showing how far he has come from the one-dimensional Abarenbo Shogun character he is best known for. The most exciting period in Japanese history is the “Bakumatsu” (Era of the Downfall of the Tokugawa Shogunate), and this is one of the most important stories of that time. Superb action, and accurate history make this excellent 2-part mini-series a necessary addition to the library of anyone interested in Japan’s military development.
