Power, corruption, seduction, and betrayal ignite the elegant, erotic, and violent realm of the samurai. It is the middle of the 18th Century, and Japan is under the reign of Iyeharu, the 10th Tokugawa Shogun. This era is commonly known as the Tanuma era, named for the powerful Shogunate minister Tanuma (TANBA Tetsuro), who has created a world of politics controlled by bribery and concessions. The general corruption and resulting lawlessness have spawned menacing secret organizations, which thrive in the shadowy underworld. The people call such groups "Hunters In Darkness". Gomyo (NAKADAI Tatsuya) is the feared and respected Boss of one of these groups.
